It is definitely hard to imagine how people went about their day to day lives without the use of the mobile phone. Like the internet and other technological innovations of the twentieth century, they have managed to make the world smaller and bring us closer together. As a result of mobile phones we can communicate with each other whenever and wherever we like, meaning that the potential for conversation and contact is much greater than it was at the same time just twenty years ago (in terms of popular usage).
But mobile phones are not just used for communication. They are also useful in that they resemble small portable computers, with some of the software of a computer available on certain devices. Some mobile phones also contain video games, calculators, alarm clocks, internet access (including email), cameras, SMS texting, stopwatches, torches, access to radio facilities and in some cases the ability to watch television shows.
They have revolutionised the way in which the world operates and changed the way in which social interactions take place, both through the ability to phone one another and through innovations such as texting.
